Ten Unique Shops to Visit in Mystic

Mystic is the perfect, stunning New England getaway year round. Whether you are planning a romantic getaway or a fun filled family vacation, there is so much to do in Mystic. One of the most unique things about a visit to Mystic is all of the memorable shops that line the streets in this adorable seaport village. In an era when you can find pretty much anything through online shopping, there is something to be said about getting to know the wonderful local artisans and small business owners that curate each one of these shops. We’ve highlighted some of the Mystic shops that are truly unlike any other. We have to admit, it was hard to stick to just ten!

Mystic Knotwork

A favorite among locals and visitors to Mystic, Mystic Knotwork is the first and oldest knot shop in the entire United States. They are known for their nautical style bracelets that have grown in popularity throughout the years, with this style being first adopted during the 60’s and continuing in popularity through the macrame craze of the 70’s. The unique pieces at Mystic Knotwork range from bracelets to woven knot decorations for your home.

Franklin’s General Store

You’ll feel as though you stepped back into time when you enter Franklin’s, located in Olde Mistick Village. You’ll instantly be delighted by the smell of freshly roasted nuts and the aroma of baked homemade fudge. You will find everything from books of New England lore, to adorable wooden toys for kids, specially aged Vermont cheddar and the tastiest saltwater taffy around!

Bank Square Books

Bank Square Books is located in the heart of downtown Mystic, Connecticut. In business since 1990, Bank Square Books is a locally owned and operated bookstore with a very knowledgeable staff and extensive collection of books. In addition to books, you will find Mystic postcards and journals as well as complimentary gift wrapping with any purchase if you are buying a souvenir for someone back home.

Mystic Army Navy Store

The Mystic Army Navy Store has a very fitting motto, “It’s Not just a Store — It’s an Adventure.” Original owners Larry Gemma and Bert Dahl envisioned bringing a new element to the Downtown Mystic Historic District in August of 1993, and it has been going strong ever since.

Mine in Mystic

This brick and mortar store is a destination in itself, offering everything from art and antiques to jewelry and salvaged goods. The owners are always on the hunt for unique finds and treasures to bring to their shop. You’ll find antiques, books, salvage items and even minerals and fossils. This is a fun and interesting shop where you never know what you will find!

Mystic Seaport Museum Store

The shops at Mystic Seaport Museum are just outside the Museum’s south entrance. Here you will find everything seafaring; from model ships, prints, gifts and so much more! There is even a bookstore that offers more than 90 of the Museum’s own published titles. This is the perfect way to end a visit to the Mystic Seaport Museum and to have something to take home to remember all the fun you had during your stay.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Store

Another fun shop at The Olde Mistick Village, the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Store offers sampling and pairings like no other. Their philosophy is simple; everyone should have the opportunity to sample the best olive oil and balsamic vinegars from around the world before deciding on their personal favorites. Consider your visit “a stroll through an authentic Mediterranean marketplace”. Even better, it is located right within the same shop as Stick Situations, a beacon of light for honey and maple syrup lovers!

Mystic Pet Shop

Pet owners will love a visit to the Mystic Pet Shop. The owners and staff are dedicated to continually learning all about pet care, products and nutrition so that they can provide their customers with the best knowledge possible. Mystic Pet offers the largest selection of raw diets with a strong emphasis on natural ingredients. You will only find the best in customer service there and, bonus…dogs are always welcome!

Toy Soldier

We all remember when we were little and walked into an old-fashioned toy store with our family. Toy Soldier in Olde Mistick Village will bring those memories flooding back. This may be one of the top experiences for your child; a place where they can spark their imagination and challenge their mind. You will find all types of gifts that inspire your child’s love of reading, science and math. You will love the puzzle section where you can find a unique puzzle to bring back to your hotel room to spend a quiet night of bonding with your family.
